What Are Materials?
Materials are inputs whose value comes from a later system: crafting equipment, upgrading a usable base, researching an item, refining an input, preparing consumables, or advancing another confirmed project. The reviewed current-build index separates crafting materials, upgrade materials, cooking ingredients, keys, and quest items; this page focuses on the groups that are intentionally spent to produce or improve something.
Keys and quest items may appear beside materials in a broad database, but they should not be treated as ordinary crafting stock. Their access or progression role takes priority.
Why Beginners Care
Materials turn exploration into future power, but they also create opportunity cost. Spending a stack on an untested weapon can delay armor, research, town development, or the build you eventually prefer. The safest beginner strategy is not “never spend.” It is spend with a named purpose.
Before committing materials, write or state the goal in one sentence: “I am improving this weapon because its moveset fits my safe openings,” or “I am researching this base because it supports the build I am testing.” If the goal is only “the item might become good,” test more before investing.
Together Crafting Changes
The official Together notes describe major changes to material use:
- crafting tables were reorganized;
- material requirements were reduced and reshuffled;
- the Scribe Table became part of item research;
- research depends on current item discovery or a broader category option;
- refineries gained fuel support;
- the pool of craftable items expanded.
These changes make version labels essential. A recipe screenshot from an older build may be visually convincing and still be wrong for the current game.
A Safe Spending Workflow
- Test the base item. Learn the moveset or armor role before improving it.
- Confirm the current requirement. Use the live station or research interface.
- Check the whole project. Know which later steps will need the same material family.
- Make one meaningful investment. Improve enough to test, not automatically to the maximum.
- Review the result. Decide whether the project still solves the intended problem.
- Record the version. Exact costs should be rechecked after substantial patches.
This workflow keeps experimentation possible. It also makes failures informative: if the base does not fit, stop before the remaining reserve is consumed.
Crafting, Upgrading, and Research
These activities answer different questions:
| Activity | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Crafting | Can I produce a base item or useful result from known inputs? |
| Upgrading | Is this tested item worth making stronger for current content? |
| Research | Can I unlock or learn access to an item through the current system? |
| Refining | Should a raw input be converted for a later recipe or project? |
Do not assume that obtaining a material proves which activity consumes it. The current item description and station preview should agree with the database record.
Beginner Storage Plan
Separate materials by decision state:
- Ready to spend: every input belongs to a confirmed active project.
- Waiting for one missing input: keep the project together so the reserved stack is not used elsewhere.
- General crafting stock: common inputs without an immediate commitment.
- Unknown or version-sensitive: items whose current role has not been confirmed.
If storage becomes crowded, review duplicate common inputs first. Do not begin by discarding unique-looking progression items or the final copy of an unfamiliar material.
Using Database Information Safely
A reliable material record needs more than a name. It should identify the current category, description, verified use, source evidence, game version, and review date. A location seen once can be recorded as an observation, but not promoted into a guaranteed farming route. Likewise, database presence does not prove that an item is obtainable in every Realm state.
The Items Guide explains publication policy. Use Resources for gathering and refining decisions, the Crafting Guide for the player workflow, and Weapons before choosing an equipment project.
