No Rest for the Wicked warrior holding a sword before a creature
Verified scope: staves are covered as a two-handed family; individual skills and attributes remain record-specific.

What Is the Staff Category?

The reviewed current-build index places staves among the two-handed weapon families and lists wands separately among one-handed families. That distinction is the most important verified starting point. A staff is not simply a larger wand, and the category name alone does not establish a spell, element, attribute, or combat range.

Use this page to understand how to test staves as a family. Individual staff requirements, scaling, skills, damage, and acquisition details remain attached to verified records.

Why Beginners Care

Players searching for a magic build may assume that any staff automatically creates a complete ranged caster. That can lead to wasted attributes or materials. In No Rest for the Wicked, the practical loadout depends on the specific weapon, its normal attacks, its equipped skills, the resources those skills use, and the rest of the character’s equipment.

Before investing, answer two separate questions:

  1. Do I like the staff’s normal two-handed moveset?
  2. Do its verified skills and requirements support the magic-oriented loop I want?

If only the second answer is yes, the character may struggle whenever the preferred skill is unavailable or an enemy reaches an uncomfortable range.

Learn the Physical Moveset First

Equip the staff without changing the whole build and test it against a familiar target. Start with:

  • the direction and reach of the first normal attack;
  • whether the follow-up remains on target;
  • the recovery after stopping early;
  • the running and dodge follow-up attacks;
  • the space needed to use the equipped skill safely.

Because the category is two-handed in the reviewed index, also confirm what giving up a separate off-hand means for your intended defense and utility. Do not assume that a staff’s appearance tells you how its attacks behave.

Skills and Resource Loop

Weapon skills should solve a recognizable combat need. A skill may offer distance, area coverage, movement, pressure, or another tool, but its exact effect and cost must be read from the current record. Test how the character returns to normal combat after using it.

A stable beginner loop includes an answer for all three states:

  • Resource available: use the skill when its opening is clear.
  • Resource rebuilding: rely on a normal attack or create space safely.
  • Enemy closes distance: defend, reposition, or use a tested short-range option.

If the build functions only while repeatedly using one skill, practise the recovery state before investing more heavily.

Attributes and Equipment

Do not assign attributes from the word “staff.” Confirm the requirements and scaling of the exact staff in the current version. Meet the minimum needed for the tested weapon, then balance the character’s ability to survive, move, and sustain the intended combat rhythm.

Armor is part of this decision. A magic-oriented theme does not by itself prove that one armor weight is correct. Equip the complete set and test whether movement, stamina, and defensive options remain comfortable. The Magic Build guide explains this as a planning philosophy without inventing a universal stat allocation.

Beginner Staff Checklist

Question Why it matters
Is the staff confirmed as usable in the current build? Early Access records and availability can change.
Can you use the normal attacks safely? Skills are not the only state of combat.
Are requirements verified? Category names do not determine attributes.
Does the skill fill a real gap? A dramatic effect is not automatically useful in your openings.
Can the loadout defend at close range? Enemies will not always remain at preferred distance.
Is the version recorded? Old magic advice may describe different systems or balance.

Verified Scope

This page verifies that staves are represented as a distinct two-handed family and should not be collapsed into the one-handed wand category. It does not claim that every staff is ranged, magic-focused, tied to one attribute, or available from a particular source. Sources

Family placement was checked against the current-build weapon index and No Rest for the Wicked Tools. Official Together material establishes the version-sensitive equipment context. No numerical value or acquisition route is imported from a single community source.
